Secretary, Department of Information and Communications Technology, Mr Steven Matainaho.

Secretary of the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), Mr Steven Matainaho,  is calling on all public bodies  (government agencies) to register their official social media accounts with the appropriate authority.

This directive follows guidelines set by the National Executive Council (NEC) and the Digital Government Act 2022.

DICT emphasizes the importance of adhering to these regulations to promote transparency, accountability, and responsible use of social media platforms.

Mr Matainaho   further urges all public agencies to register their social media accounts to establish a secure and trustworthy online presence for government entities, aligning them with official regulations.

“In today’s digital age, where misinformation and fake news run rampant, social media security is paramount for public bodies,” Mr Matainaho stated.

He stated that registering accounts empowers agencies to combat the spread of false information and uphold the integrity of public communication.

The department further urges government entities to prioritize obtaining blue tick verification, particularly on Facebook.

“This verification badge signifies authenticity and credibility, clearly distinguishing genuine accounts from impersonators and fakes,” Secretary Matainaho highlighted.

“By obtaining verification, public bodies actively contribute to the fight against misinformation and fake news.”

Secretary Matainaho added that it strengthens online presence, simplifies the takedown of fake accounts, and guarantees the public receives accurate information.

DICT strongly encourages all government departments, heads of departments, and politicians to follow these recommendations and proactively ensure the authenticity and security of their social media accounts.

For inquiries regarding registration procedures, social media security measures, and obtaining blue tick verification, public bodies can contact the DICT Social Media Management Desk at dict-smmd@ict.gov.pg.
