Acting Minister for Information and Communications Technology, Hon. Peter Tsiamalili Jr, announced that the Government in partnership with MiBank, commenced the pilot of digital bank account opening within the SevisWallet App.
Minister Tsiamalili Jr stated that MiBank is the first financial institution to participate in the pilot of the SevisWallet App.
“I am pleased to announce that the Government has in partnership with MiBank, commenced the pilot of digital bank account opening within the SevisWallet App. This initiative gives practical effect to the National Digital Identity Policy 2025, as a core component of our national Digital Public Infrastructure,” Hon. Tsiamalili said.
Through the SevisWallet App, citizens can now enroll for SevisPass, complete secure identity verification, and open a MiBank account in under ten minutes.
“This marks a huge leap in our addressing financial inclusion objectives in Papua New Guinea. It is estimated that 40–45% of adults in Papua New Guinea remain unbanked, particularly in rural and informal sectors. Distance, documentation requirements, and onboarding delays continue to present barriers,” he added.
The integration of digital identity verification into account opening is expected to:
- Streamline eKYC processes
- Strengthen AML/CTF compliance
- Reduce onboarding costs
- Remove unnecessary access barriers
This initiative supports greater participation in the formal financial sector and strengthens economic empowerment for Papua New Guineans.
In parallel, the Ministry is advancing several other digital identity projects, including:
- Digitisation of the CPA Membership Card
- Digitisation of the Nasfund Membership Card
- Rollout of the Public Service Digital ID Card
- Online Electoral Roll enrolment and updates
Minister Tsiamalili emphasized that these initiatives reinforce the Government’s commitment to building secure, interoperable, and citizen-centric digital public infrastructure.
“The Marape–Rosso Government remains committed to accelerating digital transformation, AI adoption, strengthening financial inclusion, and delivering trusted, sovereign digital systems that improve service access and economic opportunity for our people,”
