Acting Minister for Information and Communications Technology, Hon. Peter Tsiamalili Jr., announced that PNG is close to ratifying the Budapest Convention on Cybercrime, a global treaty that enables countries to cooperate in preventing and prosecuting cybercrime. PNG has also signed an additional international cyber agreement, reinforcing its commitment to global cybersecurity standards.

The announcement followed a week-long international cyber law course attended by government leaders and technical experts. The training focused on how international law applies in cyberspace, including legal responses to cyber threats, cross-border information sharing, and protection of electronic evidence.

Minister Tsiamalili said strengthening cybersecurity is essential as PNG expands its digital services, noting that legal readiness and international cooperation are critical to protecting national systems and public trust.

PNG has also demonstrated regional leadership through the Lagatoi Declaration, which promotes cybersecurity cooperation among Pacific nations. Officials say this approach strengthens regional partnerships and improves collective cyber resilience.

Participants were trained to improve coordination, develop response plans, and act swiftly during cyber incidents. Authorities aim to turn the lessons learned into practical policies and operational measures.

The Acting Minister called on government agencies, law enforcement, and partners to work together to implement these efforts. He also acknowledged the support of Australia and international cyber law experts.
