The National Information and Communications Technology Authority (NICTA) hosted the Next Gen ICT Expo at APEC Haus today, celebrating the theme “Connecting Generations – 50 Years of Telecommunications in PNG.”
The event brought together over 200 students from across the National Capital District, to be informed and engaged in what’s happening in the ICT sector, and the importance of youth engagement in shaping the nation’s digital future.
NICTA CEO Mr. Kila Gulo Vui opened the event emphasizing the government’s commitment to inclusive connectivity and the role of students as future change-makers.
“As a government committed to promoting universal meaningful connectivity for all, our overarching goal of inclusive digital society, to bridge variety of digital divide, it makes sense that we put special efforts into supporting the change makers of the future — which is you students,” Mr. Gulo Vui said.
He highlighted several flagship initiatives aimed at empowering youth, including the Girls in ICT Scholarship Program, which has supported young women in pursuing ICT studies since 2016.
“At least four scholars are sponsored every year by NICTA to take up ICT courses in our National Universities. NICTA will continue to support this program to engage young students to contribute to a sector that we believe is a key enabler to socio-economic development,” he added.
Other programs showcased included the Connect the Schools initiative, which equips secondary schools with ICT labs, and the Cyber Ambassador Program, which encourages students to promote cybersecurity awareness.
“There will be opportunities for you to engage with us and see what the ICT industry is like,” Mr. Gulo Vui assured the students.
Secretary of the Department of Information and Communications Technology, Mr. Steven Matainaho, addressed the gathering, urging students to embrace education and technology with purpose and discipline.
His message centered on the importance of Education and consistent effort and ethical use of technology.
“See all these technologies around you… my question is, are these technologies there for you to have fun with and do leisure things, or are you going to use them to create solutions for problems?” Mr. Matainaho challenged.
“We need people that will utilize technology and bring our country forward. It takes commitment and consistency to achieve something in life.”
NICTA’s Next Gen Expo served as a vibrant platform for students to explore career paths in ICT, interact with industry professionals, and learn about opportunities to contribute to PNG’s digital transformation.
