The Acting Minister of Information and Communications Technology, Hon, Peter Tsiamalili Jnr yesterday announced the release of the Fifth Generation (5G) mobile spectrum in Papua New Guinea, adding to yet another major progress in the country’s digital transformation agenda.
“This release marks the first time in PNG’s history that radio frequency spectrum will be assigned using a market-based approach, and reflects the Marape/Rosso Government’s commitment to modernising PNG’s digital infrastructure and aligning with global best practices.
“The release of the 2600 MHz band for 5G services will unlock new opportunities for innovation, investment, and inclusive growth,” Minister Tsiamalili said.
“Access to fast and reliable Internet and mobile services is essential therefore the release of the 5G spectrum will support better connectivity and access to the latest wireless technologies.
“This will in turn promote innovation, and boost productivity by supporting services such as digital government, business and private networks and health and education services,” Minister Tsimalili said.
Minister Tsiamalili commended NICTA for its leadership and extensive stakeholder engagement throughout this process.
“Today’s announcement follows the NICTA Board’s approval in July 2025, and is critical for mobile broadband and next-generation technologies.
“NICTA’s decision is through Section 164(a) of the NICT Act 2009 to maximize the efficient allocation and use of the spectrum, for the overall public benefit,” the Minister said.
The Minister said 5G is planned to be initially rolled in urban areas to improve and enhance mobile data services.
“While 4G has already significantly improved mobile connectivity across PNG, the shift to 5G represents a leap forward in capability and opportunity to further drive digital transformation,” he said.
Mr Tsiamalili said the assignment of spectrum will be conducted in an open and transparent process, and services are expected to be launched for commercial and business purposes in the second quarter of 2026.
The Minister also thanked incumbent Minister for ICT now on sick leave, Hon. Timothy Masiu for ensuring quality time for consultation and study by NICTA before this announcement.
